At A Glance
Bruce is a 5-month-old Cane Corso puppy who completed a 2-Week Board and Train with Off Leash K9 Training under the care of Sarah. Bruce is easygoing and friendly, but his family wanted strong manners early because he will grow into a very large dog. Bruce is also the mascot for the Zone 5 Police Academy, so reliability and obedience were important. After two weeks, Bruce returned home with clearer boundaries, better manners, and an early heel foundation to support future off-leash hikes.
Dog: Bruce
Breed: Cane Corso
Age: 5 months
Location: Albany, NY
Program: 2-Week Board and Train
Trainer: Sarah
Main Focus: Puppy manners, obedience foundation, heel, household consistency, preparing for a large-breed future
Outcome: Better manners, clearer boundaries, reliable understanding of commands, and an early heel foundation for hikes and public life
The Challenge
Bruce was already a good puppy, but his family knew that “good” needs structure when the dog will soon be very large and powerful.
Before training, the goals were:
- Build strong manners early before bad habits formed
- Teach clear obedience commands the whole family could use
- Create consistent household expectations for long-term success
- Prepare Bruce for public environments due to his role as a police academy mascot
- Develop heel so future hikes and outings would be manageable and safe
They wanted Bruce to obey reliably so he could enjoy freedom without being chaotic or unsafe.
The Training Approach
Bruce completed a 2-Week Board and Train designed to install foundational obedience and create early structure for a large-breed puppy.
Training focused on:
- Teaching core commands with clear expectations and follow-through
- Building manners and boundaries so Bruce understands what is acceptable
- Introducing and reinforcing heel for controlled walking
- Practicing obedience in realistic situations to support reliability
- Family education at pickup so everyone uses the commands consistently
- A thorough handoff session (about two hours) to ensure the family understood how to maintain the training at home
The goal was to set Bruce up for long-term success through early structure and consistent handling.
The Results
After two weeks, Bruce returned home with noticeable improvement and a clear foundation.
What improved:
- Better manners and household boundaries
- Clear understanding of what is acceptable behavior
- Improved obedience reliability
- A heel foundation the family can build on
- More confidence taking him into future public and structured environments
The family was especially excited about heel because it supports safer hikes and more freedom in the future.
Owner Reflection
“Bruce came home with manners and he understands what is and is not acceptable… We are really excited that Bruce can heel.”
